A Guide to Buying Artwork

It is definitely possible to buy affordable, original artwork. Do it.

This could be you!

When you are ready to buy some new artwork, there are many things to consider. Style, size, colors…it can be overwhelming!

To help you sort through the noise, it helps to know a few things about what you want and why before you start. That’s why I’m writing this guide, to give you some knowledge so that you can confidently buy artwork for your walls!

Let’s get started.

1. Know what kind of art you like.

Really, this is the most important thing when it comes to buying artwork, especially for your home. Know what kind of art you like. There are so many styles and types of art out there, and even more people telling us what is supposed to be good or in style. Don’t worry about them. The artwork you hang on the walls in your home should be artwork that you love, and that brings you joy.

If you aren’t sure what kind of artwork you like, check out my blog on how to find your art style.

One of the great things about art is that there is something for everyone out there.

So what kind of art do you like?

2. Make a Wish List!

Aside from actually purchasing artwork, this may be the most fun part of buying art! Start creating a list of the artists whose work you like and start learning more about them.

Bonus tip - Share this list with loved ones! Especially if you share space with someone, it’s important to get on the same page about new artwork.

Also, art makes a great gift!

3. Connect with the Artists!

Artists love to hear from people who are interested in their art. Follow them on social media and join their email lists. Go see their work in person if you can! Most importantly - talk to them! Don’t be afraid to ask questions and get to know the artists behind the artwork.

4. Know your Budget

Know how much you want to spend on your new artwork. Remember that there are options out there for every budget, and many artists are willing to work with collectors. Smaller-sized artworks and fine art prints fit into any budget. You can also ask the artist about splitting payments up over time.

When buying artwork, thinking about these four things ahead of time will help you a lot. There is artwork out there for every person and every space.

Just remember that the most important thing is that you love it.
